Lamented Hero – Update

Evening, all.

Just writing to say that I am still here. As ever, I’m working very hard on my Nelson biography, Lamented Hero. I’m not just saying that, by the way. It is consuming my evenings to the point that I barely have time to loaf.

The book is scheduled for release this summer (2026). Tell your friends. Even better, buy it for their birthday and watch their giddy faces descend into a frown.

My followers on Instagram will know about my struggle with keeping the word count down. The book is now longer than ever. The more I cut, the lengthier it gets. I can’t quite explain this phenomenon.

Anyway, Lamented Hero is on its way, driving towards you like Nelson driving towards the French at the Nile.

One of the unexpected joys of running this site (if you can class my vague, intermittent posts as ‘running’ it) is the number of emails I’ve received at nelsonthesailor@gmail.com. I have had some truly lovely and thoughtful comments from all over the world, including such far-flung outposts as Australia, America, India, and Brazil.

Who knew Nelson had such a reach? Not bad for a chap with one arm.

Annoyingly, the messages tend to go into my spam folder, nestled among recommendations for online Mongolian casinos and 100%-effective libido stimulants (or my money back!). If I haven’t replied to your message yet, blame my filtering system. And check your own spam, I may be there already, loitering next to a vague demand for a $65million ransom (‘or anything you can spare, Kindest Sir’) to save a prince abducted from a country I couldn’t confidently point to on a map (yet whose heir to the throne, out of seven billion options, has earmarked me as the chap most likely to have $65million to hand).

If you are yet to do so, please subscribe to this site to get my latest posts sent to your email inbox. You can also follow me on Facebook, Instagram, and, if you’re really at rock bottom, Threads. If you know someone who likes Nelson, the Royal Navy, or simply has nothing better to do with their lives, do send them in this website’s direction.

Nelson needs you. But not as much as I do. It’s lonely out here, penning overly long biographies of Georgian sailors. If I’m not careful, I might end up in one of those Mongolian casinos just to enjoy a little company, posting my winnings to an abducted prince in the hope he might reply.

With that kind of joy, who needs stimulants?

TTFN,

Ryan
